Sixth Grade

 

 

This is a Bible Course that focuses on character development with practical lessons.  The students do a Christian biography book report and lead a devotional.  They keep a personal devotional journal.  Students are encouraged to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

 

 

Students continue to develop skills in reading, writing, language conventions, listening and speaking.  Students read from several different genres in an anthology including short story and poetry, a Christian novel, and at least one other classic novel.  Students utilize Step Up to Writing strategies to write a variety of texts including responses to literature and character analysis.

 

 

 

Students study whole numbers, decimal and fraction operations, statistics and graphs, geometry, ratio and proportion, percent, integers, measurement, and probability.  They will also be introduced to algebra.

 

 

An introduction to the earth sciences with many hands-on activities including the study of the geological makeup of the earth, weather, forecasting and oceanography. 

 

 

Ancient civilizations are studied, including units on creation, Egypt, Ancient Asia and Israel, Greece and Rome.  Emphasis is placed on concepts, patterns and trends in history rather than focusing on simple facts.

Seventh Grade

 

 

Focus is on the book of Acts with an emphasis on establishment and expansion of the early Church.  In addition, the students study missionaries currently working around the world, as they prepare for their own short term mission trip to Mexico.

 

 

Students continue honing skills in reading, writing, language conventions, listening and speaking.  Students read from several different genres in an anthology including short story and poetry, a Christian novel and at least one other classic novel.  Students utilize Step Up to Writing to write a variety of texts including responses to literature, character analysis, and persuasive essays.

 

 

Students study number operations and properties, decimals, statistics, geometry, number theory, fractions, algebra, ratio, and proportion, percent, probability, and logical reasoning.

 

 

An introduction to the biological sciences, which includes the study of the five kingdoms of living organisms from simple plants and animals to complex human systems.  Students work with microscopes in a variety of hands-on activities. Each student will complete an experiment for the annual science fair.

 

 

 

The history of the world from the fall of the Roman Empire to the French Revolution is studied.  We emphasize the continuity between various world civilizations.  The year culminates with a “Renaissance Fair”.

Eighth Grade

 

 

This is a Bible course that focuses on the life of Christ from the gospel of John. Students do projects such as leading devotions, analyzing Christian songs and doing a poster of Jesus. Students are encouraged to respond to Christ.

 

 

Students prepare for the transition into high school by emphasizing more sophisticated contexts. Students need to be able to apply vocabulary skills already learned to more challenging text, reinforce the basic elements of story grammar, understand different kinds of prose, read extensively outside the classroom, write a controlling thesis, use internet-based resources, write a variety of major texts, and continue to develop their speaking skills.

 

 

 

Principles covered include number operations and properties, statistics, geometry, algebra, integers, number theory (fractions), ratio and proportion, percent probability, square roots, and logical reasoning.  Selected students study high school level Algebra I.

 

 

Students are introduced to astronomy, chemistry and physics including the modern theory of the atom, the modern periodic table, simple chemical reactions and Newton’s Laws of Motion. Students learn to apply the principles of science to their daily lives.

 

 

United States history is studied from European Discovery through Reconstruction following the Civil War.  The Constitution is thoroughly studied.  Eighth grade students must pass a Constitution test in order to graduate.
